Sunset Key Cottages

What a FANTASTIC family vacation! Can’t say enough about the staff and accommodations at Sunset Key! From the moment we stepped off the boat and onto the island it was first class all the way! Jaz (island ambassador) is so personable and kind. He makes a point to make sure everyone feels special and taken care of. Jaz, made a point to find us everyday to see if we needed anything. Art the GM at Latitudes is wonderful as well! We got to know Art last year when we went to Latitudes for dinner (stayed on Key West) and he made a point to come over and catch up with us again this year! Eduardo made sure our picky eaters in the group had exactly what they wanted to eat as well! Thomas, Madee and Skip at the pool bar spoiled us as well! Jean does a nice job taking care of the pool and beach area, constantly. Sydney at the spa spoiled our almost adult girls with facials. She took the time to teach them about the proper skin care they can do at home! We had a hour of thinking we had lost a wallet and the staff in the office did everything they could to help us out! It says a lot when the staff got to know us personally and we got to know more about them and their families. If you’re concerned about having to take the boat back and forth, don’t worry. It comes and goes often enough. It does take a little planning on when to come and go, but it drops you off steps away from Duval! Zack, one of the boat captains was very nice to chat with as well, he gave good recommendations on where to go and what to see. Pool is very relaxing, great atmosphere, chill music, two hot tubs, beautiful palm trees, orchids etc. Cottages are well equipped, even with fancy coffee makers, and the goodie baskets in the mornings and evening were a nice touch! Looking forward to coming back!

We all dream about living life on an island and leaving the stress of the world behind. However, most islands have their own stresses. Not Sunset Key. That’s because Opal Resorts manages the entire island. The resort has 35 cottages and 60 private residences, mostly cottages. You can walk the island in ten minutes. Unlike Little Palm Island and so many others, both service and food are superlative. Opal managed to hire amazing staff from both Jamaica and Eastern Europe. Service is impeccable. The chefs must have come from Heaven as Latitude's restaurant delivers morning, day and night. After arriving Key West, you taxi over from their sister property, Opal Key. From there you take a five minute ferry ride. We had a two-bedroom ocean view cottage which featured three baths, nice kitchen stocked with snacks and beverages including a bottle of white and red wine. Amenities include morning basket filled with apples, fresh homemade cookies and the pastry of the day, blueberry muffins are infamous plus OJ. The evening basket includes Kilwin’s chocolates, bottled water. Note: You pay $250 daily for this. But hey, service charges are the norm and at least they deliver the goods. The resort features a free form pool and two spas; beach with full service; gym; and tiny spa (make reservations well in advance). The star of the resort is Latitude's. It’s so popular that locals take the ferry boat over to eat here (make reservations well in advance). The restaurant features a large outdoor space overlooking the ocean (no beach seating), large indoor space for bad weather and nice lounge areas. Food is amazing, fresh, and done right. Count on fresh snapper and grouper daily. Decent wine list and excellent martinis. Yes, there are kids here and they can be very loud especially on a small island like this. But at least the beach is big enough to hide from them and they eat early. Overall, an island worth hanging out for a few days in total comfy luxury. The cottages remind you of being on Nantucket with the white fences, shutters and floral.

After nonstop clouds in the Northeast, I needed a girls’ trip somewhere warm and sunny - Sunset Key fulfilled the brief and exceeded all expectations. Taras’s taxi gets you at the airport. Capt Betsy greets you on the boat. Jas makes you feel like the most special people when you arrive. We spent the full two days on the beach - blue water, full sun, drink service - and then did dinner in Key West. Chocolates come at night and breakfast pastries arrive in the morning. Simply magical. Could not recommend highly enough. Special shout outs to: Elena and Shannon in the spa, Eugeniu at Latitudes who MADE MINT TEA OUT OF MINT LEAVES for me (I was “surprised and delighted” which should be the goal in every hospitality interaction), Melvin who helped me when I locked myself out of my cottage, Tapan who served us on the beach, Capt Zach who taught us about the birds and the fish, and Andre - always keep smiling! Will be back!

Romi joined my two youngest sons on the beach to build sand castles as part of the Sunday activities for the resort. She was super sweet and caring and spent the time playing and helping my two boys make their ideas come to life in the sand. It was nice to have them busy in the sand.

PLACE LOOKED, SMELLED AND FELT AMAZING- WENT FOR DINNER WITH COWORKERS AND PARTNERS- GOOD FOOD - HOWEVER THERE WAS ONE ISSUE THAT MADE US FEEL NOT SO NICE- WHILE WAITING FOR THE REST OF US TO LEAVE THE RESTROOM, WE OVERHEARD A CONCIERGE OR SOMEONE NEAR THERE TALK VERY DOWN TO WHAT WE THINK WAS A COWORKER, THE PERSON SHE WAS TALKING TO WAS VERY NICE AND SEEMED TO WANT TO HELP BUT IT APPEARED THE CONCIERGE LADY DID NOT CARE FOR THAT PERSON. WE ALL FELT BAD AFTER OVERHEARING THE UNKIND CONVERSATION TOWARDS THAT MAN. WE HAD TO WALK PAST HER, I DONT THINK SHE RELIZED WE WAS NEAR THE BATHROOMS AND I THINK SHE RELIZED WE COULD HEAR HER. MADE US WONDER ABOUT THERE STAFF- WE TOLD THIS TO OUR WAITER

Marci led us in a beautiful beachside class, she was wonderful at leading us through a vinyasa class and helping us modify based on our individual preferences! She also had lots of advice for what else to do on our stay! Thank you Marci for such a fun class!

Our class was the perfect mix of challenging and relaxing. Marcie is very knowledgeable about the body. We enjoyed the scenery, the music, and the workout. Thanks Marcie for sharing yourself with us! We would love to do it again. We highly recommend yoga with Marcie!

i've come here multiple times but the resort has gone down hill throughout the years. my kid threw up in one of the beds and when i asked them to clean the sheets they only changed one of the two and we were forced to sleep in a vomit smelling bed all night. second, i wouldn't recommend coming here if you have kids or back issues. they do not allow doctors to visit the island. i was laid up and could not walk and they would not allow someone to come and treat me which is unheard of for a resort especially of this caliber.

We’re currently at the hotel. It’s after 1am, our cottage is 78 degrees inside, and we have been trying for 2 hours to get maintenance to help fix the air conditioning with no luck. After many delays, we’ve now been told there are no maintenance people on property, and there is no way to reach a maintenance person by phone for help. How can this be for a hotel charging $3500 a night? My overall assessment of this hotel is that they have a good location, but lack everything else that makes a luxury hotel special and worthy of high end visitors— customer service, amenities, activities and attention to detail are completely unacceptable. As well, the food at the restaurant is mediocre at best and the service is atrocious. Daily management of the hotel and customer interaction seems to be left almost entirely to temporary workers and those on J1 visas. The “concierge” staff, while well meaning and polite, has little knowledge of the locality or the sort of assistance that customers expect of concierge desks at high end hotels. The house phone is answered by the staff at the Opal affiliated hotel on Key West, who seem to know very little about the Sunset Key property, and on two occasions provided our group completely incorrect information. There are essentially no activities offered other than access to a tennis court and the pool. There are no water activities, canoes, kayaks, bicycles or games. None of what customers have come to expect of high end hotels. There is no visible service at the pool, and no one comes around to offer refreshments or food at the chaise lounges. As the former chairman of Aman Hotels and Resorts, I have a good understanding of what it takes to offer a first class luxury hotel experience. While I obviously did not expect Sunset Key to be an Aman type of experience, I did expect it to at least be on par with a Four Seasons or Ritz. Suffice it to say, it doesn’t come close to those brands. For it to get to that level, Sunset Key would have to professionalize management, and put some real emphasis on customer service, anttention to detail and dining. For now, I think visitors to the area would be well served to save a lot of money and stay at one of the nice properties Key West.
